Overview

What vaccinations do I need for Panama?

For most trips to Panama, tetanus and typhoid are the core vaccines to have up to date, and many travellers are also advised hepatitis A. What else you need depends on where you are going and what you plan to do. A city break around Panama City and a day at the canal is a very different risk picture from jungle trekking, volunteering, or a longer stay in Bocas del Toro.

Yellow fever deserves particular attention here. It is a consideration for travel to certain areas east of the canal, such as Darién and parts of eastern Panama, and Panama is one of the countries where the vaccine can be genuinely relevant rather than routine. A short consultation lets us match your exact itinerary to current guidance and issue a certificate if you need one.

Plan ahead

Book 4–6 weeks before you fly

Give yourself time. Some courses, such as hepatitis A and rabies, work best spread over a few weeks, and yellow fever needs to be given at least ten days before travel to be valid. If your trip is sooner than that, still get in touch, because there is almost always something useful we can do.

Entry rules — separate from your jabs

Yellow fever certificate: what Panama requires

A yellow fever certificate requirement is a legal condition of entry — it is not the same thing as the vaccine being recommended for your health. The recommendation (when there is one) appears in the vaccine list above; the entry rule is below.

Flying direct from the UK? No yellow fever certificate needed for Panama

Panama only asks for a certificate (ICVP) from travellers aged 1 year+ who arrive from — or pass through — a country with yellow fever risk. That catches out multi-country itineraries, so check your whole route, not just your destination.

Separately, yellow fever transmission does occur in parts of Panama — so the vaccine itself may be advised for your health; see the vaccine list above and we'll confirm at your consultation.

Malaria & mosquitoes

Malaria and mosquito-borne illness in Panama

Antimalarial tablets are not generally recommended for most trips to Panama, though risk varies by region and your clinician will confirm this for your route. Bite avoidance still matters wherever mosquitoes are present, and it is your main defence against dengue and chikungunya, for which there are no tablets. The mosquitoes that spread dengue tend to bite during the day, so protection is not only an evening job.

  • Use a DEET-based repellent throughout the day
  • Cover up with loose, long clothing near water and jungle
  • Choose air-conditioned or well-screened rooms
