Is there a travel clinic in Knutsford?

How long is the drive from Knutsford, and where do I park?

Allow about twenty minutes in ordinary traffic: north on the A556 from the M6 at Junction 19 up to the M56 at Junction 7, then the A56 into Altrincham and the A560 Stockport Road into Timperley. Parking is on our own forecourt and free, so you arrive at the door rather than feeding a machine. Same-day appointments and walk-ins both work, though a quick call first means your vaccines are waiting when you get here.

Can I reach you from Knutsford by train?

Yes, with one easy step across a platform. Knutsford is on the Mid-Cheshire line and Northern trains run through Ashley and Hale to Navigation Road, where the railway and Metrolink platforms sit alongside each other — ride one tram stop to Timperley and walk down Stockport Road. We're going on safari in Tanzania — do we need a yellow fever certificate?

Flying direct from the UK, almost certainly not — and this is the question we untangle most often. Tanzania asks for a certificate only from travellers arriving from a country with yellow fever risk, or who have transited one for more than twelve hours; TravelHealthPro describes only a low potential for exposure in Tanzania itself and does not generally recommend the vaccine for travel there. A legal entry rule and a health recommendation are two different things. What safari travellers more often need is hepatitis A, typhoid, a current tetanus and antimalarial tablets, since malaria risk is high below 1,800 metres including Zanzibar. Tablets cut that risk sharply but do not abolish it, so if a fever of 38°C or above or any flu-like illness comes on after you are home, seek medical help straight away and say you have been to a malaria area. What do we need for Umrah or Hajj?

Saudi Arabia requires proof of quadrivalent meningococcal ACWY vaccination given at least ten days before you arrive in the Hajj and Umrah areas, and the record has to carry your full name and the vaccine details. Beyond that requirement, pilgrims are generally advised to be up to date with routine UK immunisations such as MMR and tetanus, with flu worth considering. I'm over 60 and take regular medication — does that change what I can have?

Accepted Answer

It shapes the conversation rather than closing it. With yellow fever in particular, being 60 or over is treated as a precaution rather than a bar: guidance is that the vaccine is given where there is a genuine and unavoidable risk of exposure, so it comes down to where you are really going. Long-term medicines, past illness and any weakened immunity all feed into that judgement, so bring your repeat prescription list and we will work through it together before anything is given.

We're cruising from Southampton — is that different from a single-country holiday?

Quite different, because one ticket can mean six sets of country advice. NaTHNaC asks cruise passengers to check they are in date for routine UK vaccines including MMR, and notes that respiratory and stomach infections spread quickly in an enclosed environment, so flu vaccination and unromantic hand hygiene both earn their place. Shore excursions in the tropics add insect-borne risks the ship itself does not. How does the yellow fever certificate work on the day?

Accepted Answer

We vaccinate, then complete your International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis there and then, which is why we ask for your passport — the details must match it exactly. Two timing points matter: the certificate does not become valid until ten days after vaccination, so a border check on day five is a problem, and since 11 July 2016 a single dose is accepted for the life of the person vaccinated, so an older certificate should not be refused for being more than ten years old. With what you have already had. Bring any vaccination records you can lay hands on, even old ones, plus your itinerary and dates. The NHS suggests seeking travel vaccination advice four to six weeks before you go, although it is rarely too late to do something useful. Most long-haul plans begin by making sure routine UK immunisations — tetanus, diphtheria, polio and measles among them — are current, then build from there. If nothing can be found, we work from your destination and your history instead.
